Grandparents DNA Test
Price: $949
Testing: Child and both maternal or paternal grandparents
Timeframe: 5-7 working days from receipt of samples at our office
Our Grandparent DNA testing service (also called a missing parent test) will establish whether you are really the biological grandparents of your grandchild or grandchildren. Your DNA test results are ready in 5-7 working days from the receipt of your samples. Samples are collected painlessly and quickly using our home sample collection kit. Note that we require the samples of both grandparents to carry out this test.
Note: We can only guarantee standard result turnaround time when testing takes place solely using oral swab samples. Using a discreet sample for your test may lead to an increase in turnaround time.
Grandparents DNA Testing Science
We would recommend a grandparent test in cases where grandparents need to know if they are really related to their grandchild. Results of this test determine the statistical probability that a person is the biological grandparent of a grandchild. Very often, our clients will actually carry out this test instead of a paternity test. A paternity test requires the samples of the alleged father and child but sometimes, the alleged father might not be willing or available for testing. In this case, we can take the DNA from both the paternal grandmother and grandfather and compare their DNA to that of the alleged father’s child to establish a biological relationship. Grandparents and grandchildren will share 50% of their DNA. If the results show the grandparents are not related to their grandchild, then this indicates that the alleged father is also unrelated to the child.
Test results are intended to provide a statistical likelihood that gives evidence to support the tested relationship in question. Providing additional parties to be tested (for example, a known parent’s sample) or performing direct relationship testing may provide additional evidence.
Sample Collection For Grandparentage Testing
International Biosciences supplies you with a home sample collection kit which can be used for self-sampling in the comfort of your own home. You can collect your DNA samples using the mouth swabs we provide in our kit. You will have 4 swabs for the grandfather, 4 swabs for the grandmother and 4 swabs for the alleged grandchild. The swabs are found in colour coded envelopes and each test participant is allocated a specific colour to make things as easy as possible.

FAQs
Do I need samples from both grandmother and grandfather?
Our Grandparent DNA testing requires the samples from both grandmother and grandfather. Some companies offer grandparent testing with just the sample of the grandmother or grandfather but having just one sample runs a considerable risk of getting an inconclusive result. At International Biosciences, we won’t ever compromise the accuracy of a result and will thus, only suggest a grandparents test if we have samples from both grandparents. If one grandparent is deceased, we suggest you consider another test. Click here to view our full list of tests.
Why do I need the sample from the grandmother and grandfather?
Our laboratories use very advanced DNA testing technology to reconstruct the profile of the missing alleged father. Using the DNA sample of both grandmother and grandfather, we can actually reconstruct the profile of the alleged father. We can then compare reconstructed profile to the profile of the child.
What if grandfather and grandson are being tested?
Due to the fact that the Y-chromosome is found solely in males and males from the same paternal line will share the same Y-chromosome profile, a Y-chromosome test is a great tool to confirm whether two or more males share a common paternal line. For example, a grandfather will share the same Y-chromosome profile with his biological grandson. Father and son will also share the same Y-chromosome profile. This inheritance pattern makes a Y-chromosome test very reliable and accurate. Read more about our Y-chromosome test.
