Rhodesian Ridgeback
A ferocious hunter, the Rhodesian Ridgeback is calm and gentle in the home. They are loyal, straight forward, and very protective of their family.
Hailing from Africa, the Rhodesian Ridgeback was bred to corner and hold large game prey like lions, bears, and boars. They are still used for hunting today but they are also found competing in dog sports such as agility, obedience, and tracking.
One of the Rhodesian Ridgebacks signature traits is their characteristic ridge that runs down their back. Ridgeback puppies are active and lively. They mature into a dog with adequate exercise needs and make great hiking or jogging partners. They also require mental stimulation to avoid destruction by boredom.
Rhodesian Ridgebacks are quiet and gentle with their families but can be wary of strangers and will defend their home if they feel the need. The Ridgeback is a strong, confident dog with a certain hardheadedness. These traits could make living with children difficult – although they are tolerant of kids. If they are raised with other animals, Ridgebacks will get along with them but they can still be suspicious of outsiders, no matter how socialized they are.
They are intelligent and quick-learners, but early training is necessary, as Rhodesian Ridgebacks can be very stubborn and strong-willed. They don’t bark often, only to alert you of unusual activity or if they are bored. They could also become destructive if they are bored.
Major Health Concerns: A normally very healthy breed that is able to withstand extremes in temperature, the Rhodesian Ridgeback may be susceptible to hip dysplasia and cysts.
Interesting Fact: The Rhodesian Ridgeback is also known as the African Lion Hound as it was used to protect farmers from, yes that is right, lions!
